Ostional Turtle Refuge

Ostional National Wildlife Refuge is located just a 20 min. drive north of 7 Oceans Retreat.
It was officially created in 1982 to protect one of the worlds most important nesting sites of Pacific Olive Ridley Turtles. The "Arribadas" or arrivals last from 2-8 days and start to happen 3-4 nights after the full moon. Although the Arribadas happen all through the year at least once a month, the peak nesting season is from July thru Dec. where as many as 100,000 turtle may nest. Why they return to this prestine black sand beach remains a mystery to scientists, however we are greatful for their presence, they are magnificant creatures to observe in their natural habitat. Tours or rides to Ostional are easy to arrange through 7 Oceans management.
You can contact the village of Ostional to find out the current status of nesting, to do so you will need to speak a little spanish since the phone 682-0267 is the local public phone in the village.
